The Washington Institute of Language is located in downtown Kumamoto [1], a medium-sized city in southwestern Japan [2]. The city is noted for its famous castle, which was home to a samurai lord, and for the natural surrounding environment. The city is within an hour's drive of Mount Aso -- an active volcano -- and the western sea. Summers are hot and humid, while winters infrequently see snow. As a metropolitan area, you'll find Starbucks, KFC, McDonald's and Baskin Robbins, as well as traditional Japanese cuisine, shops and entertainment.
